Yesterday, I called out the Mexican Spider-Man issues as a hot tip for the market. But there is more ground to cover here!
The numbers don't lie. UK price variants of Marvel Silver Age books are massively under-valued.
Let's take a look at the Universal CGC census numbers for a few fan favorites:
Amazing Fantasy #15: 2396 US / 56 UK
Incredible Hulk #1: 1387 US / 38 UK
Journey into Mystery #83: 1714 US / 30 UK
Amazing Spider-Man #1: 3212 US / 68 UK
Avengers #1: 3775 US / 69 UK
Daredevil #1: 4748 US / 87 UK
Fantastic Four #1: 1899 US / 30 UK
Without going through these book by
book, I can assure you that UK price variants sell for FAR LESS than their US counterparts.
One example: FF #1, September 2022 a UK 4.0 sold for $14,500.
In October 2022, an equivalent US edition sold for $28,800.
The UK variants were printed at the same time. The principle difference is the covers, which don't have a month in the number box, and have a price in British pence.
They are also much harder to find in high grade. Typical British households use
attics to store "junk", and unless the attics are properly protected against heat and cold fluctuations, British comics are usually found in far inferior condition to US ones.
If you're not familiar with old British currency, then you need to be aware of Shillings. 12 old pennies went into one Shilling. It looks like a slash with a minus sign on the cover. Here's
the UK variant of ASM #101:
