One of the upsides, if you did NOT buy at the top of the 2021 market and you are now wondering what to do with your comic book cash is, you can buy books at 2019 prices with all the knowledge of the past few years in your back pocket.

Here are my top three tips for the near future for potential return.

Fantastic Four #1 is my first pick for potential returns in the
short to medium term

FF#1 is an obvious choice of long-term money maker. It started the Marvel Age of Comics; it's from 1961 and surprisingly scarce in the market; the Marvel Studios "homecoming" movie is confirmed for 2025.

You can get this very solid combo spec-book and mega-key for prices not seen since the early stages of the Pandemic. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Detective Comics #140 is the first appearance of the Riddler. DC comic books are generally under-valued compared to Marvel keys

If you're looking for outright value, then it's hard to ignore the opportunity to grab DC issues instead of Marvels. Despite the bubble bursting, Marvel keys are like-for-like much more expensive.

Why did I land on Detective Comics #140? Despite its price being FAR higher than the late 2000-teens, it's still off Pandemic highs by about 1/3. Riddler will be in the follow up to The Batman.

Yes, you could take a punt on Two-Face, but this yellow-covered key issue is always going to be popular.

Errors and recalled comics are growing in popularity. This error of Fantastic Four #110 was printed with the wrong ink

Where is the growth of interest in the comic collecting hobby?

• Marvel test market price variants (30c and 35c price variants) -- that ship has sailed.
• Canadian price variants -- boat has departed.
• Newsstand variants -- canoe has paddled.
• Mexican Spider-Man issues -- ese barco ha zarpado.
• Errors and recalled comics -- still some growth to go!

This is a fresh area of the hobby. So much so that CGC itself doesn't even know how to classify some of the issues. Sometimes, the errors are Qualified (green label), sometimes Universal (blue label).

There are some errors/variants that aren't even recognized by CGC -- did you know that there are two different color versions of Avengers #10? Or that Amazing Spider-Man #194 exists with a weird color stripe at top right?

A deep dive into books like the FF#110 error, or the Spawn #1 with missing black ink, will repay you in the long term. This kind of error is hugely valuable in similar hobbies like stamp collecting or coin collecting.
