Has the selloff in late 2022 left Fantastic Four #1 undervalued?

It's pretty easy in hindsight to predict the comic book selloff after the pandemic, with the perfect storm of the government money drying up, the cost of living crisis hitting, stock market and crypto declines, and high interest rates.

One other thing that's easy to predict: the Fantastic Four "homecoming" movie which is being released in 2025.

Normally, the standard pattern for a movie release is:

• the keys affected hockey stick in value over the two years until the initial movie release
• profit taking occurs, and they lose a bit less than half of the gains accumulated in the runup
• The books track sideways for months or years, until a sequel is announced
• Occasionally the books tank if the movie has terrible reviews

This time, things are very different. The typical movie runup of prices and selloff has already happened! 

The pandemic means that FF#1 is now selling for 2020 or even 2019 prices, even though the movie is a known event.

What Does This Mean for Potential Buyers of Fantastic Four #1?

Let's take a look at various grades of this classic 1961 Marvel mega-key and see what's happened since Covid hit.

In some cases, the most recent sale is significantly below 2021 prices.

I believe that Fantastic Four #1 represents a unique and powerful opportunity at the current market prices. For sure, the economy is improving, and we're seeing a gradual strengthening of prices in collectibles in many verticals, including comics.

By 2025, I expect the market to be much more buoyant, and the typical runup in prices should occur once more as the release date closes in.
