Sell My Comic Books Newsletter: Video Killed the Gradio Scar

I Know. That Was a TERRIBLE Pun...

Hi

Sorry guys. I know, the title of this email was a truly appalling pun.

BUT there was a good reason for using it.

Everybody has scars from bad grading mistakes.

I spent the first year of my "education" as a comic book dealer doing nothing BUT making mistakes.

It cost me over $30,000 in bad purchases before I finally fixed my problems.

Read on to see what I did...

First, the Problem...

Whenever we buy books on eBay with the idea of flipping them for a profit, this is roughly what we want to occur:
  • Identify a book that is for sale at a good price
  • Buy it and submit it to CGC for grading
  • Get it back and sell for a profit
Pretty easy when you think about it.

But hard to do consistently if you can't grade comic books from the screen.

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 is a very common book for this kind of activity.

Here's what we WANT the result to look like:

Here's how we WANT to operate. Find books to buy at a price which allows us to get them in a CGC holder and make a profit
Here's how we WANT to operate. Find books to buy at a price which allows us to get them in a CGC holder and make a profit

But think about the challenge here.

All of the math you need to do on an eBay purchase for profit hinges on your ability to predict what grade CGC will give to the book when you submit it.

CGC 9.8s of this book average at $176 when they sell.

If you're able to spot a 9.8 "raw" on eBay and buy it for $50, here's the approximate math:

Purchase of book: -$50
Shipping to you: -$5
Shipping to CGC: -$5
Grading fee: -$20
Shipping back to you from CGC: -$10
eBay revenue: $176

PROFIT: $86

Unfortunately, most people's idea of what a 9.8 looks like result in this:

It's FAR TOO EASY to get a 9.0 when you expected a 9.8
It's ALL TOO EASY to get a 9.0 when you expected a 9.8
OOPS...

Let's run the math again when the result is NOT what we wanted. CGC 9.0s sell for $50 on average.

Purchase of book: -$50
Shipping to you: -$5
Shipping to CGC: -$5
Grading fee: -$20
Shipping back to you from CGC: -$10
eBay revenue: $50

LOSS: $40

The $40 loss figure does not even factor in opportunity cost (could have spent the money on a winner instead)...

...or the inconvenience of having the money tied up in the CGC submissions queue for up to 60 days.

Multiply all those bad decisions by dozens, or hundreds, of CGC submissions, during a "career" as a comic book trader, and you can see how I managed to lose $30,000 in less than 12 months.

Fortunately, I made the best decision of my life. One that led me to have THIS look on my face instead:

It's all about the Benjamins...
 It's all about the Benjamins...
Here's What I Did...
And How It Helps YOU

I found an expert in CGC comic book submissions, and learned the skill myself.

Then I followed his advice. A lot.

And I started consistently making money buying and selling comic books.

That's it.

(Were you expecting the Wizard of Oz or something?)

Think About It...

  • If you want to be an architect, you study from a professor of architecture at University for seven years.
  • If you want to be an electrician, you work for three years as an apprentice under a qualified sparky, and then another two as a journeyman.
  • If you want to learn how to cook, you can take a class, or get hands-on help from your mother, or spouse, or friend.

Whichever path you take, you are "outsourcing" your learning to an expert.

Then you practice what you have been taught.

Eventually, it becomes second nature.

Find YOUR Sean

I found Sean Goodrich. At the time, he had just left his six-year post as Auction Co-ordinator for the well-known auction house, ComicLink.

Now, he's my business partner.

(When you find somebody great, it pays to have them on your team ;)

Here he is, holding a couple of ragged old back issues we bought with all that $$$.

Sean was the perfect teacher for me.

Every day at his full-time job, he handled CGC submissions.

He saw the books before they went to CGC.

He saw the grades the books got when they came back.

Over six years, he personally handled tens of thousands of CGC-graded books, and more importantly, the same books BEFORE THEY WERE SLABBED.

He had all the skills I needed. So, I sat down with him for a weekend, and he taught me how to do it.

Now I Will Do the Same For YOU

How much do you think a weekend with an expert would cost you?

(HINT: Most experts in any industry charge upwards of $300 per hour.)

Jeez, just having Stan 'the Man' Lee sign a Secret Wars #8 can cost $90...

If you flew to Montreal and asked me to teach you what I know, I'd insist on four figures for the privilege of picking my brain.

But don't worry. You can learn everything about grading books on eBay for less than the last amount you LOST when you got a 9.0 instead of a 9.8.
