The Top Five Must-Own Comics for Value Appreciation in 2017 |
Hi
2016 is nearly done (hope it was a positive year for you all).
We thought we'd finish the year with a round-up of the top 5 books you should buy now and hold for at least a year...
...OR 50 percent profit, whichever comes first!
Unsurprisingly, TV and movie tie-ins (or speculation of them) feature pretty highly in this list.
NYX 3: First Appearance of X-23 (Wolverine's Daughter) |
Record sale in CGC 9.8: $780
At the time, a CGC 9.8 would have cost you $500. That means you'd already have made $280 profit if you sold it today!
MARKET TIP: Look to hold this book until it hits about $1,250 in CGC 9.8.
Amazing Spider-Man #129: First Appearance of the Punisher |
Record sale in CGC 9.8:
$10,800 (at least in recent years)
This book is a no-brainer tip. Three sales have broken $10,000 this
year.
Already a mega-key from the Bronze Age of comics (click for top 60 Bronze books), ASM #129 has been further boosted by the Daredevil TV series on Netflix.
The appearance of Punisher on this show has long been a badly-kept secret.
MARKET TIP: You won't double your money in a year on this book, but gains should be steady.
If you don't have $10K handy for a CGC
9.8, then look for a fresh 9.0 with white pages for about $1,500.
9.0s have appreciated 85 percent in the past two years.
Batman #121: First Appearance of Mr. Zero (Mr. Freeze) |
Record sale in CGC 6.0:
$1,840
If you want to talk about tough Silver Age key issues, then this is surely one of the most challenging to track
down.
We seldom see this book in collections. It's always missing from the master list.
Yes. Arnie "did" Mr. Freeze (getting top billing in the process ABOVE Batman!!) back in the bad old days of the post-Tim Burton Batman movies, but this
character isn't going to go away.
MARKET TIP: There are plenty of chancers asking for ridiculous prices on eBay right now. I'd hang onto my money until a
reasonable one comes along.
Look to pay around $1,250 for a CGC 4.5, and probably $2,000-2,500 for a clean 6.0.
Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #320: First Appearance of Cheryl Blossom |
Record sale in CGC 9.8: $2,000
Cheryl Blossom did something Archie comic book fans (click for main article) had not seen in a long time: throw a grenade into the classic Archie-Betty-Veronica love
triangle.
The feisty
redhead went on to become a star of the Archie universe, eventually spinning off her own series.
This book is surprisingly scarce, considering it was published in 1982.
MARKET TIP: You'll do well to track down a CGC 9.8, as there are only four in the census.
A crisp 9.6 with white pages should cost around $1,000 and prove to be a decent investment.
Giant-Size X-Men #1: First Appearance of Wolverine in the Super-Team (2nd Full Appearance); 1st Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus and Thunderbird in New Team
|
Record sale in CGC 9.8: $8,000 (at least in recent years)
Closing
the gap on Incredible Hulk #181, this book is as important to comics history -- and arguably more important to X-Men fans.
It's gaining value in all grades above
8.0.
MARKET TIP: 9.8s may be out of sight for many investors. Stick to a 9.0 or 9.2 with white
pages.
As usual, if you can get 50 percent out of your book, sell it. Don't try to hit the very top of the market.
I love to hear your opinions! If you'd like to add something, then please...
I'll read every email I
receive.
Be safe and happy this holiday season, and we look forward to serving you again in 2017.
