The Copper Age Comes of Age,
Turtles-Style!

Hi
Heroes on the half-shell have never looked so good as they do today! New ground has been broken for a 1980s book...

Cowabunga, Dude! TMNT #1 Sells for $90,000 in CGC 9.8
|
$90,000 buys a lot. Most Marvel Silver Age keys can be bought in nice shape for that price
Let's start on a positive note. I always said the 1980s rock! And now you can truly compete on a dollar-for-dollar basis with the 1970s.
In fact, I can't think of many 1970s comics that have come close to this price.
There is a freak CGC 9.9 of Tomb of Dracula #10 out there. And the Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.9 which sold for $150,000. That's it off the top of my head.
Would YOU Pay $90K for a Turtles 1?
I would however like to ask... What ELSE could you buy for that money? Presuming we skip things like cars and move straight on to comic book investments.
Here are five ideas:
- Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 6.0 $58K
- Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 8.0 about $90K
- Fantastic Four #1 CGC 8.0 $75K
- Detective Comics #33 (origin of Batman) CGC 6.0 about $80K
- X-Men #1 CGC 9.0 about $85K

What This Sale Means for Lesser Copies

If you like a TMNT #1 as an investment and want something a little more accessible, then this sale spells trouble.
The last sale of a CGC 9.6 was $20,000. I expect that to be shattered the next time one comes up! I wouldn't be surprised to see it sell for $35K.
What about examples like this?
A CGC 7.0 of TMNT #1 is now even hotter thanks to the $90K sale
A 7.0 sold before the big sale for $4,800, while a 7.5 just popped a new-record $7,000.
And a CGC 9.2 just sold for $7,500 in July! THAT looks cheap now.
My best guess (if anybody's guess is worth anything) is that prices might break like this:
- 9.6 $35,000
- 9.4 $20,000
- 9.2 $12,500
- 9.0 $10,000
- 8.5 $9,000
- 8.0 $9,000
- 7.5 $7,500
- 6.0 $5,000
It will be fun to see how it plays out. Whatever happens, this is a red letter day for comic book collecting.
The day the Copper Age came of age.
